President Jokowi meets President Xi Jinping to affirm strategic partnership

Jakarta, The Indonesia Post – Indonesian President Joko Widodo held a bilateral meeting with the President of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) Xi Jinping, which emphasized the strategic partnership between the two countries.

In his remarks, President Xi welcomed and expressed his joy at meeting President Jokowi in person.

“His Majesty is the first Head of State received by the Chinese side after the Beijing Winter Olympics. This is enough to prove how intimate the relationship between the two sides is,” President Xi said at Villa 14, Diaoyutai State Guesthouse, Beijing, Tuesday.

President Jokowi was greeted by President Xi and the two immediately took a photo together. After that, the two countries’ leaders together headed for the meeting room.

President Jokowi in his speech also expressed his gratitude for the warm welcome to himself and the Indonesian delegation.

During the meeting, the two leaders expressed their commitment to strengthening mutually beneficial economic cooperation for both countries as well as the region and the world.

“China is Indonesia’s comprehensive strategic partner. We must fill this partnership with cooperation that is beneficial for our country, and at the same time for the region and the world,” said President Jokowi.

In addition to economic cooperation, said Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi in her statement after the meeting, the two leaders also discussed various issues, including regional and world issues.

“As the largest economy in Southeast Asia, Indonesia has an important place for China and the region. Moreover, Indonesia currently holds the G20 Presidency and next year will become the Chair of ASEAN,” said Retno.

G20 and ASEAN issues were also discussed at the meeting.

“Indonesia expresses its appreciation for China’s support for Indonesia’s chairmanship in the G20. Regarding ASEAN, Indonesia is committed to making ASEAN relevant, not only for the Indonesian people, but also for the region and the world,” added Retno.

President Xi, continued Retno, appreciated President Jokowi’s efforts in seeking peace and improving the humanitarian situation, among others, through visits to Kyiv and Moscow.

“President Xi considers the visit to show Indonesia’s responsibility as a big country,” added Retno.

Retno added that the two leaders also discussed the importance of mutually beneficial concrete cooperation in the context of the Global Development Initiative (GDI).

“If concrete cooperation can be realized, it is hoped that the achievement of the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) of developing countries can be better,” said the Foreign Minister.

Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said that China was committed to increasing green economic cooperation, among others, through the construction of a Green Industrial Park in North Kalimantan.

“President Xi also emphasized his commitment to increasing imports of Indonesian agricultural products,” said Retno.

Previously, in President Jokowi’s meeting with PRC Prime Minister Li Keqiang and President Xi in Beijing today, the two countries have agreed on several agreements, namely:

1. Renewal of the MoU on the Synergy of the World Maritime Axis and Belt Road Initiative,
2. MoU on Vaccine and Genomics Development and Research Cooperation,
3. MoU on Green Development,
4. Marine Cooperation Arrangements,
5. Protocol on the export of Indonesian pineapples,
6. Arrangements for Cooperation in the Exchange of Information and Enforcement of Customs Violations, and
7. Action Plan for Cybersecurity and Technology Capacity Development Cooperation.

Also accompanying President Jokowi in the meeting with President Xi Jinping were Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi, Minister of State Secretary Pratikno, Minister of SOEs Erick Thohir, Minister of Investment/Head of BKPM Bahlil Lahadalia, and the Indonesian Ambassador Beijing Djauhari Oratmangun.
