Jakarta, The Indonesia Post – President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) said the construction of the Ciliwung River Sewer (Sodetan), which aims to overcome flooding in DKI Jakarta, will be completed in April.
“Soon it will be finished. Maybe this April, God willing, it will be finished, the Ciliwung sewer which has been stopped for six years,” Jokowi said while inspecting the Ciliwung River Waterway Development Project to the East Flood Canal (KBT) in Jakarta, Tuesday.
He added that in the last 1.5 months, the Provincial Government of DKI Jakarta has acquired land for the construction of the water canal. Thus, the drilling for the canal can be resumed after being stopped for a long time.
After the construction of the canal is completed, Jokowi believes that the area of land that is prone to flooding in Jakarta will be significantly reduced.
“If it has been opened (Sodetan Ciliwung), (with flood status) alert IV, (Sodetan Ciliwung) it will reduce 33 cubic meters per second, it’s huge; then if it’s on standby I, 63 cubic meters per second, it’s huge,” said Jokowi .
The Ciliwung Sodetan Tunnel is up to 1.3 kilometers long.
“In this tunnel, the canal on the right is 3.2 meters, the tunnel on the left is 3.25 meters, 1.3 kilometers long. This, when it is operational, will greatly reduce flooding in Jakarta,” he explained.
After the Ciliwung Sodetan has been completed, efforts to deal with Jakarta flooding will continue by optimizing pumps in the river and also normalizing the rivers that cross DKI Jakarta. Then, another effort is related to the construction of a sea wall to deal with tidal flooding in the northern area of Jakarta.
“Plus those in the north are flooded with tidal floods, both with sea walls and giant sea walls. I have also ordered that to (pj) the governor of DKI Jakarta,” said Jokowi. (mhn/bbs)
