Thousands of Homecomers Ordered to Turn Back to Jakarta

Jakarta, TheIndonesiaPost – Decisive action was taken by the police to enforce the homecoming ban. Vehicles that crossed out of Jakarta were ordered to turn right.

Vehicles have begun to be asked to turn around at the West Cikarang Toll Gate. The majority requested to turn back to Jakarta are passenger buses destined for a number of areas outside Jabodetabek.

Data from the Metro Jaya Police Traffic Directorate indicated that 1,181 vehicles were asked to turn around to the Jakarta area since 00.00-05.00 WIB yesterday.

“498 vehicles at [toll gate] Bitung, 683 vehicles at [Cikarang toll gate],” said Director of Traffic at the Jakarta Metropolitan Police, Senior Commissioner Sambodo Purnomo Yogo, was quoted from CNNIndonesia.com, Friday (24/4).

Head of the Operational Section of the Directorate of Metro Jaya Regional Traffic Police AKBP Dermawan Karosekali said his party had asked for around 700 vehicles to turn around. The 700 vehicles are indicated to be going home via the Jakarta-Cikampek Toll Road.

President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) finally decided to ban homecoming in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic. Prohibition of going home in order to break the chain of the spread of the coronavirus.

Homecoming prohibition will take effect on Friday (4/24) until May 31 for motorized vehicles. Then for rail transportation until June 15, sea transportation until June 8, and air transportation until June 1, 2020.

Police officers prioritize persuasive action and violators will be asked to turn around in the early stages of April 24 to May 7. Then, at the law enforcement stage, May 7-31, violators are asked to turn around and are also given sanctions according to the applicable regulations.

The regulation does not apply to logistic, drug transportation, hearses and ambulances.

In connection with the ban on going home, the Jakarta Police Traffic Directorate has prepared 18 integrated security posts to block and monitor the traffic of people going in and out of the Greater Jakarta area. (ras/bbs)
