Washington, The Indonesia Post – Thousands of people gathered in New York City on Friday United States time to provide support for Palestine and oppose Israel’s attack on Gaza.
The demonstrators demanded an end to the Israeli occupation and the liberation of Palestinian territories. They accused Israel of committing “genocide” in the region.
While unfurling the Palestinian flag and various banners, the demonstrators marched from Times Square to the Israeli Consulate General in solidarity with the Palestinian people.
Banners bearing messages such as “Free Palestine”, “Resistance is Legitimate”, “Gaza rejects the Zionist regime”, and “End all US aid to Israel”, were clearly visible.
However, this demonstration was met with resistance from demonstrators who expressed solidarity with Israel.
Anadolu footage captured the confrontation between the two opposing groups, including one person who was arrested by police.
The second demonstration in New York took place amid continued Israeli air strikes since Hamas’ attack on Israel last weekend.
Israeli forces continuously launch military attacks on the Gaza Strip in response to Hamas attacks in Israeli territories.
The conflict broke out last Saturday when Hamas started Operation Al-Aqsa Flood, which was a surprise attack in the form of rockets and infiltration into Israeli territory by land, sea and air.
Hamas argued that the operation was in retaliation for the storming of the Al-Aqsa Mosque in East Jerusalem and the increasing Israeli settler violence against Palestinians.
The Israeli military then launched Operation Iron Sword targeting Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
Israel’s response extended to blocking water and electricity supplies to Gaza, which further worsened living conditions in the territory which has been blockaded since 2007.
More than 3,300 people have died since this conflict broke out, consisting of 1,900 Palestinians and 1,400 Israelis. (mhn/bbs)
