Palembang, The Indonesia Post – Acting Regional Secretary of South Sumatra, Edward Candra attended the simultaneous planting of trees throughout Indonesia in commemoration of Forester Service Day 2024 at the Punti Kayu Nature Tourism Park, Palembang, Thursday (7/3/2024).

The Acting Regional Secretary of South Sumatra, Edward Candra, read out the instructions from the Acting Governor of South Sumatra, Agus Fatoni, appreciating and expressing his pride in the forest guards in South Sumatra for their dedication to protecting the environment and forests for the benefit of living things together.

“We need to protect this together. “These efforts are part of actions to reduce the impact of disasters (mitigation) due to climate change and as steps to restore the environment,” he said.

This activity has been carried out several times and is one way of campaigning to create a tree planting environment. This is done in order to minimize the impact that occurs due to environmental damage.

“This activity is a campaign to love the environment and we need to encourage this to continue, as well as other related programs such as climate villages,” he said.

Previously, the South Sumatra Provincial Government expressed its thanks to the Ministry of Environment and Forestry for allocating funds for South Sumatra in collaboration with partners appointed by the ministry as part of saving the environment in South Sumatra.

“South Sumatra has made a work plan to support efforts to reduce emissions, encourage the use of electric vehicles, continue to encourage electricity savings with efforts to maintain and increase absorption, and control land conversion,” he explained.

In future, he hopes that after being planted, these trees will be maintained until they grow big and strong so they don’t die.

Meanwhile, the Inspector General of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry is currently held by Ir. Laksmi Wijayanti, M.CP., reading the Minister of Environment and Forestry’s remarks, said that planting trees is simultaneously an effort to mitigate climate change, restore the environment and as an effort to improve environmental quality by planting trees, as well as increasing the general public’s insight into the benefits of planting trees.

“Trees are useful as providers of oxygen, carbon storage, the existence of trees is important for the survival of living things, reduces greenhouse emissions, reduces climate change, resists wind exposure, and is a solution to air pollution,” he said.

Climate change affects food security which will certainly affect people’s welfare. Climate change mitigation needs to be done to preserve the environment so that it can be passed on to future generations.

“I invite foresters, local governments, business leaders and all elements of society to jointly contribute in the form of real and measurable activities as committed in global forums,” he said.

Indonesia considers it important that the commitment to protecting the environment be met with real action. This is to reduce air emissions through the forestry sector and other sectors. One way is to plant and maintain as many trees as possible.

“Appreciation and thanks to the Provincial Government and City Government for supporting various efforts to protect and manage the environment and forests. “Let’s build harmony with nature and start planting,” he invited.
