Moscow, The Indonesia Post – The entire urban area of Mariupol, a city in eastern Ukraine, has been completely cleared of the Ukrainian Armed Forces and foreign mercenaries, the Russian military said Saturday.
The remnants of the resistance forces have been besieged inside the Azovstal iron and steel factory, Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said in a press statement. He said 1,464 Ukrainian military personnel surrendered in the fighting in Mariupol.
As a major port city on the Sea of Azov, Mariupol became one of the fiercest fighting sites in the Russo-Ukrainian conflict.
Ukraine’s Defense Ministry said Friday that its troops are still fighting the Russians in Mariupol after nearly seven weeks since the city’s siege.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned that a clean sweep of Ukrainian troops in Mariupol would end any negotiations with Russia. (ojn/bbs)
