142 Papuan students who studied abroad were sent home

Jayapura, The Indonesia Post – The Papua Provincial Government will repatriate 142 students from the province who studied abroad but did not complete and exceeded the study time limit according to the scholarship award agreement.

The head of the Papua Province Human Resources Development Agency (BPSDM) Aryoko AF Rumaropen in Jayapura, Sunday conveyed that the return of the student was based on the evaluation of the Papua Provincial Government while the student was studying at home or abroad.

“So based on the evaluation, there were 145 Papuan students who did not complete their undergraduate studies, masters and doctoral degrees as stipulated in the scholarship recipient’s decision,” he said.

According to Aryoko, however, there was also an agreement between the students during the initial process of receiving the scholarship.

“Those who were sent home, on average, exceeded the study period of more than six years and some even took nine to ten years,” he said.

He explained that apart from that, there were legal issues that had not been resolved. He considered this to be outrageous.

“For that we must return home,” he said again.

He added that the next step was that the provincial government would coordinate with the embassy and representatives of these children to return to Indonesia in order to arrange for the continuation of their studies.

“We regret this condition, but because the time period has passed and it is impossible to be refinanced,” he said. (mhn/bbs)
