South Sumatra Governor, DPR Leaders Discuss Strengthening National Food Security Efforts

Palembang, The Indonesia Post — Governor of South Sumatra, H. Herman Deru, held a meeting with Deputy Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) for Industry and Development Coordination, Saan Mustofa, to discuss food security monitoring efforts in South Sumatra. The meeting took place at the Bina Praja Auditorium on Wednesday (October 15, 2025).

In his remarks, Governor Deru expressed his appreciation for the DPR RI delegation’s visit, noting that it reflects the central government’s attention to regions that play a vital role in supporting national food security.

“South Sumatra deserves special attention as it ranks among the top five food-producing provinces in Indonesia. This year, we’ve seen a significant increase in agricultural production,” said Deru.

The Governor added that improved irrigation systems, fertilizer availability, and road infrastructure are essential to sustain agricultural growth and strengthen connectivity between production centers and distribution networks. He also urged the DPR to support the acceleration of repairs to the Palembang–Betung and Palembang–Banyuasin national roads, which serve as crucial routes for local communities.

Deru further proposed that funding discussions for national food security programs within ministries and agencies be aligned with regional development plans (RPJMD), ensuring the benefits directly reach communities at the grassroots level.

Meanwhile, Deputy Speaker Saan Mustofa emphasized that food and energy security remain top priorities for the central government. He acknowledged South Sumatra’s strategic role as one of Indonesia’s leading food-producing regions.

The meeting was also attended by members of DPR RI Commissions IV and V, the Deputy Regent of Banyuasin, as well as heads of provincial departments (OPD) and other local officials. (mhn/ril)
