Zurich, The Indonesia Post – The UN aid agency reported that at least 64 civilians were killed and more than 160,000 others displaced after Russian troops invaded Ukraine this week.
“As of February 26 at 17:00 local time OHCHR (UN Office for Human Rights) announced that at least 240 civilians were victims, including at least 64 people killed,” the report said.
OCHA added that the actual toll was likely “much higher.”
Damage to civilian infrastructure has left hundreds of thousands of people without electricity or water.
Hundreds of houses were damaged or destroyed, while bridges and roads were hit by mortar fire which prevented some communities from accessing markets, he said.
The report cited the United Nations refugee agency as saying more than 160,000 had fled to other parts of the country and more than 116,000 had been forced to flee to neighboring countries.
“UN agencies and humanitarian partners have been forced to temporarily stop operating due to the deteriorating security situation,” OCHA said.
“The United Nations and its partners maintain their presence across the country and remain committed to staying on the ground and responding to growing humanitarian needs and protection risks as the situation allows.”. (mhn/ojn/bbs)
