Jakarta, The Indonesia Post – Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh does not expect Indonesia to be a mediator or mediator in the country’s long conflict with Israel.
“What we need from Indonesia is not to be a mediator, and Indonesia will not be a mediator because Indonesia is on the side of Palestine,” Shtayyeh said at a press conference in Jakarta, Tuesday.
He emphasized this when asked about the views of a number of parties who believed that Indonesia needed to normalize relations with Israel, if it wanted to do more to support Israeli-Palestinian peace.
“Indonesia has always sided with peace and justice for Palestine and for all people. Indonesia has always supported the rights of the Palestinian people to have their own state and for Palestine to be recognized as a sovereign state according to the 1967 border (agreement),” said Shtayyeh.
He also explained that the main problem in the conflict between the two countries was not about mediation, but rather Israel’s intention not to end the illegal occupation of Palestine.
That is why, he said, mediation carried out by many countries, such as the United States, Norway, and several European countries, has not produced any results so far.
“So any acknowledgment (from other countries) to Israel today is an impetus for Israel to kill more Palestinians and support for its illegal settlement policies,” Shtayyeh said, urging countries not to normalize their relations with Israel.
Instead of improving relations with Israel, he called on the international community to immediately punish Israel for its oppression of the Palestinian people.
“Israel must be punished today,” Shtayyeh said. (mhn/bbs)
