Teachers’ Union Protests School Opening Plans

Jakarta, TheIndonesiaPost – The Federation of Indonesian Teachers Unions expressed concern that students and teachers will become victims of the COVID-19 outbreak if the Ministry of Education and Culture plan to open a school in mid-July is carried out.

FSGI Deputy Secretary-General Satriwan doubted the coordination of the central government and regional governments that seemed out of sync with the handling of the corona.

“If you want to open a school in the new school year, okay that’s good news. But [the data] must be really [right], which [regions] are green, yellow, red,” he said quoted from CNNIndonesia.com Saturday (9/5) ).

School opening must be synchronized with case data and corona distribution in each region.

Do not let, he continued, when students and teachers return to activity turned out to be the area under surveillance.

“Well, I am worried because the government coordination is bad, the victims will go to school, later students and teachers,” he said.

He further assessed that there were a number of other things that need to be considered by the Ministry of Education and Culture regarding the opening of schools. For example regulating the technical implementation of New Student Admissions (PPDB).

Satriwan reminded that a new school year would not have been possible without PPDB. And learning from previous years, schools often receive queues of new student parents even though registration is done online.

The Ministry of Education and Culture must also pay attention to supporting infrastructure to handle corona in schools. This means that before school opens, equipment such as washing soap, hand sanitizers and masks must be prepared.

According to him, schools even need to have personal protective equipment (PPE) in each School Health Unit (UKS). Previously, the Ministry of Education and Culture stated that it planned to reopen schools in mid-July 2020. However, this only applies to schools in areas that are already corona-safe. (jekki/bbs)
