Badung, The Indonesia Post – UN Deputy Secretary General Amina Mohammed praised Indonesia for being successful in controlling COVID-19 so that the 2022 Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (GPDRR) could be held face-to-face in Nusa Dua, Bali.
“I would like to express the appreciation of the United Nations to the President and the Indonesian people who have hosted the 2022 GPDRR,” said Amina Mohammed in her speech at the opening of the 2022 GPDRR in Nusa Dua, Badung, Bali on Wednesday.
“I would like to congratulate and express appreciation to Indonesia for the steps it has taken to address and respond to the COVID-19 pandemic that has allowed us all to meet at this conference in person,” said Amina.
The Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations considered Indonesia’s efforts to vaccinate its 217 million population as a major achievement.
“We commend Indonesia’s leadership for its vaccination program to keep everyone safe and act and respond to the COVID pandemic,” said Amina.
According to her, Indonesia is a very important partner country that has taught the world about disaster risk reduction efforts.
On that occasion, Indonesian President Joko Widodo said that the Indonesian government had implemented a dynamic policy in dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic according to the current situation by implementing a “gas and brake policy” to maintain a balance between health and economic interests.
“This policy has proven to have a good impact,” said President Jokowi.
Jokowi said that Indonesia – which consists of 17,000 islands with a population of 217 million people – has injected 411 million doses of vaccine for its citizens.
President Jokowi also said that the daily cases of COVID-19 in Indonesia had fallen sharply, from 64,000 cases per day at its peak to 345 cases per day on Tuesday (24/5).
“In addition, economic growth is maintained at 5.01 percent and inflation is at a safe level of 3.5 percent,” he said.
Indonesia is hosting a series of meetings of the 7th Session of the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (GP2022) in Bali on 23-28 May 2022. (mhn/ojn/bbs)
