Jakarta, The Indonesia Post – The Chairperson of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), Puan Maharani, hopes that the partnership between Indonesia and Vietnam can be established with strategic values like brothers.
“Thus this relationship becomes a strategic relationship, not only in certain fields, (but) becomes a brotherly relationship between Indonesia and Vietnam,” Puan said at the Parliament Complex, Senayan, Jakarta, Friday.
This was conveyed by Puan after holding a bilateral meeting with the Chairperson of the Vietnam National Assembly Vuong Dinh Hue to sign a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on inter-parliamentary cooperation.
Because, she said, relations between Indonesia and Vietnam had existed for a long time, even since the era of President Ho Chi Minh and President Soekarno.
“The partnership between Indonesia and Vietnam must be strategic because the relationship between Indonesia and Vietnam has been established for a long time, starting with good relations between President Soekarno and President Ho Chi Minh,” she said.
For this reason, he hopes that Indonesia-Vietnam relations will not only concern the economic or trade fields.
“But also education, tourism, then people to people contact, not only between the government and the legislature or parliament,” she said.
Puan said that the purpose of visiting Vietnam National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue was also to attend the 44th ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) General Session which was held on 5-10 August 2023.
“Because now Indonesia is the Chair of AIPA 2023, we also want to meet and attend the AIPA conference on 6 August 2023 which will be opened by President Jokowi,” she said.
In addition, she continued, Vietnam National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue will hold a meeting with Indonesian President Joko Widodo and Indonesian 5th President Megawati Soekarnoputri on Friday.
“Because he wants this strategic relationship to run more closely, to be able to improve existing relations more, and of course the brotherly relations that have existed from a long time ago can be carried out again after the pandemic,” she said.
Previously, the DPR RI had formed a Bilateral Cooperation Group (GKSB) with 102 parliaments of friendly countries in the 2019–2024 period, one of which was the National Assembly of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
During the meeting, Puan was accompanied by the Chairperson of the Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation Agency (BKSAP) Fadli Zon, Deputy Chairperson of BKSAP Gilang Dhielafararez, Deputy Chairperson of Commission I of the Indonesian Parliament Utut Adianto, Indonesian Ambassador to Vietnam Denny Abdi, and other BKSAP members.
