Boris Johnson resigns as UK PM

Jakarta, The Indonesia Post – Boris Johnson said Thursday he was stepping down as Britain’s prime minister, following calls from fellow ministers and lawmakers in the Conservative Party.

“The process of selecting a new leader must begin now,” Johnson said at the door to Number 10 Downing Street.

“And today I have appointed a cabinet to carry out the duties until a new leader takes office,” he said.

Earlier, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson insisted on remaining in power on Thursday after four top ministers resigned, while the attorney general expressed his hope for Johnson to step down and acknowledged he also wanted the British prime minister’s post.

More than 50 ministers have resigned in less than 48 hours, saying Johnson is unfit to lead after a series of scandals, while dozens of politicians in the Conservative Party are waging an open rebellion.

Northern Ireland Secretary Brandon Lewis, became the latest cabinet minister to resign on Thursday morning, following the resignations of the finance, health and state ministers of Wales. (mhn/bbs)
