Decorative Flowers ‘Fever’

The Indonesia Post – The ornamental flower hobby is booming in the midst of a pandemic. No wonder that currently, various kinds of ornamental flowers are displayed on the side of the road. Including other trinkets such as pots or flower vases.

Social media and e-commerce platforms do not want to be outdone. Various kinds of photos and promos have been boosted to meet the demand for ornamental flowers which has recently become more ‘crazy’.

Decorative flowers that are sold are quite diverse. From Anthurium, Aglonema, Monstera to bonsai, Gold of Kinabalu Malaysia or Papuan Black Orchid which costs tens or even hundreds of millions rupiah.

The price is relative. Of course it depends on the tastes and pockets of each. However, recently, especially since the ornamental flower “fever” hit, not a few ornamental flowers have been sold above their market price. Even if you could say the price is unreasonable, it is an “illogical price”. But if anyone dares to buy it, that’s fine. It’s not our money, right!

“Fever” of ornamental flowers is not new in Indonesia. The “fever” of ornamental flowers seems to have a certain cycle. And each cycle, the flower that is in demand is different.

“Is there a tropical fruit” fever, “I muttered to myself. That is, people are busy planting guava, papaya, salak, passion fruit-especially durian-‘ the king of fruits’. If it can’t be done communally, then at least plant fruit in the yard.

Let the atmosphere be like the old days. Where almost every house has a fruit crop. Whether it’s guava, star fruit, mango or something else. Those with stems can create shade, which at night can suck up CO². The roots can hold water and soil from abrasion. Which if it bears fruit, the children will definitely grab it. Even though if you want to buy the price is not much. What makes the difference is the sensation. The sensation of climbing a tree-grabbing-until being chased by the ‘owner’ of the fruit.

If it can be planted communally, it is even better. Can meet local or even export fruit needs. For example, exports of durian to China, whose market is fertile, because in China the diet of fruits is booming.

Indonesian durian is certainly not inferior to Thailand’s Monthong durian or Malaysia’s Musang King. Indonesia has the Namlong or Super Tembaga durian from Bangka. There are also other types of durian such as Bawor, Serumbut and Turmeric durians from Kalimantan.

The hobby of planting ornamental plants is certainly not wrong. Even though the price of ornamental plants is exorbitant. But growing fruit crops can be even more rewarding. Beneficial for many people. Imagine how many farmers would be helped by their economy if tropical fruit crops could become Indonesia’s top export. Maybe we no longer need to send Indonesian Migrant Workers (TKI) abroad. It is better for them here at home. It is enough that fruits are sent abroad. So that there is no more torture of immigrant workers like what is often broadcast on television. (jekk/bbs)
