JAKARTA, The Indonesia Post – The Supreme Court of the Republic of Indonesia has a new chairman. Based on the results of the two-stage election that contested 47 votes, the name of Muhammad Syarifuddin was chosen as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in the 2020-2025 period. The elected chairman promised to make the judiciary better.
The man who was born in Baturaja, South Sumatra, in 1954, became the 14th Chief Justice of the Republic of Indonesia replacing Hatta Ali who retired. Previously Syarifuddin’s position was the Chief Justice who served as Deputy Chief of the Supreme Court in charge of Judicial Affairs.
The election of candidates for Chief Justice is chosen by 47 judges who have the right to vote and vote. The selection takes place in two stages. For the first stage there were six candidates for the chairman of the Supreme Court, namely M. Syarifuddin (won 22 votes), Andi Samsan Nganro (won 14 votes), Sunarto (won 7 votes), Amran Suadi, Supandi, and Suhadi (the last three names each only get 1 vote).
In the first stage, all of the six candidates have not met 50 percent plus one vote, based on Article 7 letter e of the Election Rules for the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. However, M. Syarifuddin has won the most votes in the election which was broadcast live via online.
Then in the next election only two people continued the second stage. Syarifuddin won 32 votes, while Andi Samsan only got 14 votes. Based on the results that have been determined in the Decision of the Chairperson of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Indonesia, Number: 96 / KMA / SK / IV / 2020 concerning Regulations for the Election of the Chairman of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Indonesia. “Candidates for the elected are officially appointed as the Chair of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Indonesia,” said Chairman of the Indonesian Supreme Court for the 2015-2020 period, Hatta Ali, immediately knocked on the hammer.
From previous information, Muhammad Syarifuddin who became the new Chief Justice of the 2020-2025 period, was previously the Deputy Chief of the Supreme Court, Judicial Field since 2016. He is the Chief Justice from Baturaja, South Sumatra Province. He is the Chairperson of the Indonesian Islamic University Alumni Association, replacing Mahfud MD. “All stages of the election have been carried out according to procedures, and the results have been valid,” Hatta stressed.
After being elected, Syarifuddin claimed he would improve the performance of the Supreme Court. According to him, the breakthrough of the previous chairman Hatta Ali has been named the Father of Nation Reform in the Judiciary.
“Pak Hatta Ali as the senior Chief Justice of the Supreme Court has brought great progress and extraordinary changes to Indonesian law. He (Hatta Ali) made a lot of progress.
