Jakarta, The Indonesia Post – Vice President Ma’ruf Amin emphasized that the import of used clothing could endanger the sustainability of the national textile industry and its products could also have a negative impact on the health of its users.
“I think the response has been conveyed by the president that the import of used clothes endangers the national industry, our textile industry. Later the domestic products will be disrupted by the import of used clothes,” said Ma’ruf Amin in Riau, Monday.
Ma’ruf Amin said this to answer media questions after attending the Asri Nusantara 2023 Village Day event at Makmur Village, Pangkalan Kerinci District, Pelalawan Regency, Riau Province, Monday, as per a press release received in Jakarta.
According to him, the ban on the import of used clothes is not only to protect the local textile industry but also to prevent the entry of used goods that are not guaranteed to be clean, and to reduce the environmental impact of used clothing waste.
“Although it may not have potential, it could also lack cleanliness, health, and then it’s also not good (for the environment),” he explained.
Ma’ruf Amin emphasized that currently the government is making efforts to be proud of using domestic products. According to him, if Indonesia can produce its own clothes, why should it import used clothes?
Therefore, according to him, the best thing now is to promote the domestic textile industry. He also appealed to the public to continue to inflame love for domestic products.
“When else if not now and who else if not us?” he said.
Accompanying Vice President Ma’ruf Amin at the press conference were Minister of Villages, Development of Disadvantaged Regions, and Transmigration (Mendes PDTT) Abdul Halim Iskandar, Governor of Riau Syamsuar, and Regent of Pelalawan H. Zukri. (mhn/bbs)
