Erick Thohir: The future of SOEs is determined by young leaders

Jakarta, The Indonesia Post – Minister of State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN) Erick Thohir said that now is the era of young leaders to determine and build a roadmap for SOEs in the future.

“We are not only talking about leadership but how in the future the SOE roadmap for the next 10 years will start to be built today,” he said during a press conference after opening the BUMN Next Gen, Build Future Leader event at JCC, Jakarta, Wednesday.

Minister Erick said that nowadays, competition in the business world is no longer competition between companies, but competition between countries.

The competition between countries is actually an opportunity for Indonesia because Indonesia’s position as a non-aligned country is very possible to be able to knit all countries that are part of the ecosystem.

“The Deputy Ministers and I also ensure that the young leadership in the future will be part of a sustainable BUMN,” he said.

Indonesia has the potential to dominate world economic growth like China in the 1980s. Therefore, it is very important to determine the 10 SOE blueprints for the next year and the young leaders as future SOE leaders, he called the leaders who are able to maintain the implementation of the blueprint.

Currently, the number of millennials in state-owned enterprises, which amount to 42 SOEs, has reached 65 percent. Erick emphasized that he would continue to push the number of young employees in SOEs to 80 percent. This is because of the total 273 million Indonesian population, the majority 53 percent are under 35 years of age.

As for recruiting future leaders, the Ministry of SOEs not only conducts training for the younger generation in the board of directors or BOD (Board of Directors) minus 1, but is now also focusing on all levels in SOEs so that young employees in SOEs are able to improve their quality in facing competition in the world. future and bring Indonesia to be a developed country in 2045.

On the same occasion, the Special Staff (Staffsus) of BUMN Arya Sinulingga said that young leaders have a very big opportunity to take part in BUMN. Through the BUMN Next Gen program, Build Future Leaders, it is hoped that prospective young leaders will be able to understand what BUMN is doing, things that have been successful and the steps forward for BUMN.

“This is a transfer of values and also information that is not only at the top level of the board of directors but to the level below the employees and this is especially for young people because they are the movers whose millennials in BUMN are 60-70 percent,” he said. (mhn/bbs)
