Palembang, The Indonesia Post – The South Sumatra Provincial Government is pushing forward the proposal to create two new autonomous regions by dividing Ogan Komering Ilir (OKI) and Lahat regencies.
Governor Herman Deru said in Palembang on Monday (Sept. 15) that OKI has been proposed to split into OKI Regency and East Coast Regency, while Lahat would be divided into Lahat Regency and Kikim Area Regency.
“The proposal for regional expansion and the formation of new autonomous areas has already been included in the National Legislative Program (Prolegnas),” Deru stated.
He explained that regional expansion is a strategic step to extend public services, especially in areas located far from existing regency administrative centers.
“We will continue to push for this because it concerns the people’s interests. Many residents struggle to access services due to the distance,” he added.
However, Deru emphasized that follow-up action on the proposal still depends on the central government’s decision, as the moratorium on regional expansion remains in place.
Meanwhile, South Sumatra’s DPD RI member Abcandra Muhammad Akbar Supratman said the council has requested a written explanation from the provincial government, which will serve as material for discussions in coordination meetings with relevant ministries.
“We have asked several questions regarding the proposal and are now waiting for a written response from the provincial government. These notes will be brought to the meeting with ministries,” he explained. (mhn/ril)
