Minister of Industry offers China pharmaceutical and bioprospective industry cooperation

Jakarta, The Indonesia Post – The Minister of Industry (Menperin) Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita offered the Chinese government the potential for cooperation in the pharmaceutical industry to the bioprospective green industry.

The offer was made by the Minister of Industry in a meeting with the Chinese Minister of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) Jin Zhuanglong during his working visit to Shenzhen, China, last Tuesday (4/7).

“Indonesia’s health system is currently one of the largest in the world, reaching 240 million people with a turnover value of US$40 billion. Therefore, it is very important to deepen the structure of the pharmaceutical industry,” said the Minister of Industry in a statement in Jakarta, Thursday.

The Minister of Industry said that Indonesia hopes for investment development from China for medicinal raw materials other than paracetamol. This is because the raw materials for medicines have not yet been explored, so they still depend on imports.

Another collaboration offered by Indonesia is related to the development of a green industry that prioritizes efficiency and effectiveness in the use of resources in a sustainable manner.

According to the Minister of Industry, the green industry is also important with the increasing market demand for green products and regulations regarding sustainable practices in global markets such as Ecolabel, Carbon Tax, Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, environmental management system, or other certificates that guarantee the legality of resources.

In this case, the Minister of Industry hopes that Indonesia and China can work together to develop green products through a bioprospective industry that processes biological resources, including plants, microorganisms and animals.

“One of the potential resources for this industry that Indonesia has is seaweed and microalgae which can be processed into bio-product raw materials, such as for bioplastics, biofuels and fertilizers,” he said.

The Minister of Industry also hopes to be able to immediately discuss together and produce a binding agreement between the two countries regarding manufacturing development for both countries. (mhn/bbs)
