The new name Turkiye is now used in various foreign languages.
Speaking to Anadolu Agency on Wednesday (1/6), UN Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said they received a letter from Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu addressed to Secretary General Antonio Guterres, asking “Turkiye” instead of “Turkey”, to be used internationally. international.
Dujarric said the country’s name change took effect from the moment the letter was received.
Cavusoglu announced the formal submission of the letter to the United Nations and other international organizations on Tuesday (31/5).
“Together with our Communications Directorate, we have managed to prepare a good foundation for this. We have allowed the UN and other international organizations, countries to see this change using ‘Turkiye’,” Cavusoglu told Anadolu in the capital Ankara.
Turkey began the move to change its internationally recognized official name in English to ‘Turkiye’ last December, after President Recep Tayyip Erdogan released a memorandum asking the public to use ‘Turkiye’ to refer to the country in every language.
Erdogan also appealed to companies to use the “Made in Turkiye” label for their export goods. In addition, state agencies are also instructed to use ‘Turkiye’ in their correspondence.
