Jakarta, The Indonesia Post – Minister of Home Affairs (Mendagri) Tito Karnavian said all potential in the democratic process can be managed to avoid polarization (divisions).
Tito explained that in security science, every division/difference has the potential for conflict. Conflict is normal, because of different interests and goals.
“However, conflicts must not destroy each other, they must be managed, so that this conflict cannot tear the nation apart,” he said in Jakarta, Monday while giving remarks at a national dialogue activity with political parties in preparation for the 2024 election.
In the activity initiated by the National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT) together with the KPU and Bawaslu, Tito acknowledged that the direct election system in democracy helped legalize division (polarization) in society.
“Actually, with direct elections, this divides society, polarizes society in the name of democracy,” he said.
He said, Indonesia must implement the principles of democracy, so that the potential for conflict is the price that must be paid, because it adheres to a democratic system.
Tito gave an example of a country like Afghanistan which became independent earlier than Indonesia, only has seven tribes with 99 percent of the same religion, until today the conflict has not ended.
The Minister of Home Affairs emphasized that his institution had conveyed to several parties regarding the indicators for the 2024 Election, namely that it would take place safely and smoothly according to applicable regulations.
Furthermore, voter turnout is high. Because it provides strong legitimacy, for whoever wins becomes the government. Then, there will be no conflicts that can undermine the unity and integrity of the nation, especially violent conflicts. Lastly, the existing government remains smooth both at the center and in the regions. (mhn/bbs)
