The Babies came from behind in the first round of the Indonesia Open

Jakarta, The Indonesia Post – Indonesian men’s doubles Leo Rolly Carnando/Daniel Marthin, nicknamed The Babies, almost lost the opening game during the first round of the Indonesia Open 2022, before coming back and winning two straight games 21-16, 21-17 over Fabien Delrue/William Villeger in Istora Gelora Bung Karno, Jakarta, Tuesday.

Leo/Daniel started the opening game against the French men’s doubles by competing fiercely to lock up the early advantage. Both pairs were involved chasing each other for points in a match that took place on field number two.

Had a 4-2 lead, but the 23rd-ranked pair turned 7-9 behind Delrue/Villeger. Luckily, the Indonesian pair were able to reclaim the dominance of the game and lead 12-10.

Leo/Daniel’s shrewdness and accurate strokes benefited their points, which further widened the gap to 17-12, 19-15, and ended with 21-16.

In the second game, Leo/Daniel were under pressure and their strategy was almost countered by the 35th-ranked men’s doubles.

Starting from behind 6-8, their position is getting squeezed and adrift to 8-12. The potential for playing the third game was almost in sight, before Leo/Daniel could finally break the deadlock and turn things around to 13-12.

Delrue/Villeger once again pushed through with a 13-15 lead over the Indonesian pair, but again the Babies stole the lead and finished the second game with a score of 21-17 after struggling for 40 minutes.

Next in the round of 16, Leo/Daniel will meet the eighth seed from Denmark, Kim Astrup/Anders Skaarup Rasmusen. So far, the record of the meeting between the two pairs is 1-1, with their last match occurring at the Thailand Open 2021 which was won by representatives of Indonesia. (ojn/bbs)
