Palembang, The Indonesia Post — The Governor of South Sumatra, H. Herman Deru, emphasized the importance of fostering creativity and pride in local products, particularly traditional textiles (wastra) and handicrafts unique to South Sumatra, on Thursday (October 9, 2025).
He conveyed this message while officially opening the Sriwijaya Creative Festival of South Sumatra and launching the Wastra Sumsel by Dekranasda program at the Dining Hall of Jakabaring Sport City, Palembang.
In his remarks, Governor Herman Deru stated that creativity is one of the key assets in addressing the challenges of the modern era. He also highlighted that many of the most promising innovations come from women who skillfully transform local materials into economically valuable products.
“This morning, we are presented with a variety of creative works from different elements of society. In reality, it is the women who have shown the most remarkable creativity,” said Herman Deru.
Continuing his speech, the governor underscored that South Sumatra possesses a rich cultural heritage that must be preserved and further developed, including traditional textiles (wastra) that serve as a symbol of regional identity.
Meanwhile, the Chairperson of Dekranasda South Sumatra, Hj. Feby Herman Deru, expressed her gratitude for the successful organization of the event. She explained that through Kriya Sriwijaya, Dekranasda South Sumatra continues to support local artisans and promote traditional crafts, especially wastra — distinctive woven fabrics found across the province’s various districts and cities.
