Palembang, The Indonesia Post – South Sumatra Governor H. Herman Deru officially launched the Planting Movement (Gertam) to Welcome El Niño at the rice paddy field in Cahaya Bumi Village, Lempuing District, OKI Regency, on Tuesday (May 19). This tactical step was taken to maintain regional food security stability in the face of this year’s dry season.
Herman Deru is optimistic that through strong synergy between regional heads, farmers, extension workers, and the full support of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), the production target of 5 million tons of dry milled grain (GKG) by 2026 will be achieved, thereby leapfrogging to second place nationally.
Uniquely, the El Nino momentum has actually been used as a blessing in OKI to optimize the potential of 30% of the swampy land that has been flooded so that it can be planted optimally.
On this occasion, assistance was also provided in the form of 2 tons of subsidized fertilizer and rice seeds for 400 hectares of rice fields.
“If not now, when? If not us, who? Let’s work together to ensure South Sumatra’s food self-sufficiency,” HD emphasized. (mhn/ril)
