Commemorating South Sumatra’s 80th Anniversary, Herman Deru Encourages Younger Generations to Protect Nature at the Forestry Festival

Palembang, The Indonesia Post – To commemorate the 80th anniversary of South Sumatra Province, South Sumatra Governor H. Herman Deru attended the Forestry Festival with the theme “Know the Forest, Know the Future.” The event took place solemnly at Raden Fatah State Islamic University (UIN) Palembang on Wednesday (May 21, 2026).

In his remarks, Herman Deru emphasized the importance of forest literacy for the younger generation amidst the current environmental conditions. He stated that tree planting is not merely a ceremonial activity, but rather an effort to educate today’s children about the nature and profound benefits of trees.

“Looking at the video, it only took three minutes to cut down that tree. But it took 25 years to grow to that size,” Herman Deru reminded us.

He also conveyed a profound message about the importance of preserving nature to address various environmental threats in the future. Herman Deru encouraged all levels of society to leave a green and healthy natural legacy for future generations.

Meanwhile, the Head of the South Sumatra Provincial Forestry Service, Drs. H. Koimudin, SH, MM, explained that this festival was held to raise awareness and new hopes in protecting forests for a sustainable future.

“Today, 200 trees were planted as part of forest rehabilitation and conservation efforts. This activity also involved farmer groups and featured various forest product exhibition stands,” said Koimudin.

Through this synergy between the government, academics, and farmer groups, it is hoped that South Sumatra’s commitment to preserving forests and the environment can be consistently maintained.

Also present were heads of regional government agencies (OPD). (mhn/ril)
