Jokowi: Prepare a New Normal Era Tourism Promotion Immediately

Jakarta, TheIndonesiaPost – President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) plans to move the world of tourism back ahead of the new normal period later.

He has ordered the Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Wishnutama Kusubandio to prepare a domestic tourism promotion program in the new normal period. The program must focus on promoting local and safe products amid the coronavirus pandemic.

“Must prepare a special strategy in promotion in the new normal era. Focus first to encourage domestic tourism, domestic tourists,” Jokowi said in a video conference as quoted by Cable News Network Indonesia.

Jokowi also reminded to prepare a tight health bottle so that the risk of corona virus transmission can still be suppressed in the tourist area. Therefore, he asked for new standards and trials before the tourism sector was truly opened to the public.

He said the risk of reopening the tourism sector is quite large. The reason is, if there is a corona virus transmission, the impact will be very negative for the tourism industry.

“Once there is a imported case and then there is a health impact, then the bad image of tourism can be attached and it will be difficult for us to fix it again. Therefore this must be calculated correctly on the ground,” Jokowi explained.

Jokowi also stated that the government would first see how other countries began to open up the tourism sector to become an example. Thus, it can be considered by the government in preparing a new normal scenario in the tourism sector.

According to Jokowi, the choice of a vacation in the new normal period will change from before there was a corona virus. People will prefer to go to a quiet place to reduce the risk of corona virus transmission.

“Holiday references will shift to alternative vacations that not many people like solo travel tours, wellness tours, and also include virtual tourism and staycation,” Jokowi said.

Therefore, he reminded that the tourism industry and the creative economy players prepare a new program to adjust market interest. Businesses must also anticipate changes in this trend in order to attract people back to travel in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. (hengki/bbs)
