3 Bodies of Indonesian Crew Thrown into the Sea, Ministry of Foreign Affairs Call the Chinese Ambassador

Jakarta, TheIndonesiaPost – A video containing the disposal of the bodies of crew ship members known to Indonesian citizens gone viral.

The bodies of Indonesian citizens who work on Chinese ships are thrown into the sea when the ship rests in Busan, South Korea. Video of body disposal was published by South Korean media, MBC News.

Quoted from Merdeka.com, Director General of the Protection of Indonesian Citizens and Indonesian Legal Entities Ministry of Foreign Affairs Joedha Nugraha claimed to have received information about it.

“According to our data, there are 3 Indonesian crew members who died and their bodies were banned into the sea, therefore we will also ask for an explanation whether they are in accordance with the provisions of international practice,” he explained.

According to the ILO Seafarer’s Service Regulation, the burial at sea procedure is justified under certain conditions. Among other things, the body died due to infectious diseases or the ship does not have the facility to store the body so that it can have an impact on the health of the ship.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will summon the PRC Ambassador, asking for clarification related to the treatment (alleged slavery) received by other Indonesian crew members (on Chinese fishing vessels),” he wrote.

The Indonesian crew’s video from Indonesia was previously viral in South Korean media and was published by MBC News.

In the opening sentence, the news anchor said what would be aired was the sad death and human rights violations of Indonesian sailors on Chinese fishing vessels. This MBC News report is at the request of the ship’s crew to the South Korean government and MBC News to request assistance when the ship enters the port of Busan.

In the video seen a coffin wrapped in red cloth placed on the deck of the ship. The body was named Ari (24) from Indonesia. He died on the boat after working for more than a year.

The Chinese sailors surround the body and hold a simple funeral ceremony. After that, they lifted the coffin and threw it into the sea.
