Covid ‘virgin’

The Indonesia Post – Covid-19 is still a serious problem. The number of sufferers has reached 40 million cases and has spread throughout the world. Some countries are starting to be able to cope. However, several other countries are facing new challenges. One of them is Argentina – whose number of Covid-19 sufferers has now increased again to exceed 1 million cases.

Even though covid-19 has spread to almost all over the world, there are still some areas that are still “virgin” from covid-19. Alias has not found any positive cases. One of them is the Nunavut area, a territory in northern Canada, North America. Founded in 1999. Its area is about 2 million square kilometers or about three times the area of Texas. There are many islands and lakes here. The population is only 36 thousand people. Its original tribe is the Inuit. The capital is Iqaluit.

How can it be free of covid?

The key to Nunavut’s success, up to now, is that there are still zero cases of Covid-19, which is not much different from other regions and countries. Among them are social restrictions and lockdowns. It’s just that, the application is more stringent.

Here, other than natives are prohibited from entering. Even if there are residents who come in and out, they must be immediately isolated for two weeks. Only after that was allowed to return home. The isolation places are in a number of hotels that have been transformed into isolation centers. And these isolation places are closely guarded by law enforcement officials. Even so, some were caught running away from the isolation center. But arrested again. Then isolated again.

Another reason is the high level of awareness of its citizens. People in Nunavut consciously practice distancing. They are well aware, if Covid-19 strikes, the condition will get worse. Because most of the people of Nunavut have a problem with tuberculosis. The extreme weather in that area has caused many of its residents to contract tuberculosis. And as is well known, covid-19 will very easily attack someone who has a comorbid disease.

Then, another reason is geographic problems. Nunavut which is in the Arctic circle makes it difficult to reach. Not to mention the islands and lakes that surround it. This reason is also why until now there are no toll roads to the area. So that it is not easy for newcomers – who have the potential to bring and cause Covid-19 – to visit there.

Quoting the BBC, Nunavut had actually recorded a covid-19 case. But the person is a miner. The mine is very far from the city. Because of that, although there were potential cases, they were considered mining clusters. Meanwhile, for Covid-19 specifically for Nunavut residents, it is still zero.

Then what about Indonesia?

In Indonesia, there are also areas that are still “virgin” with Covid. Among them are parts of Papua, parts of East Nusa Tenggara, West Southeast Maluku, and parts of the Riau Islands.

These areas are geographically similar to Nunavut. Papua is in a mountainous area. You have to take a plane first so you can reach the area. Likewise, NTT, Maluku and the Riau Islands which surround the sea. In fact, this is the case with most provinces in Indonesia.

But how come many provinces are in the red zone? Never mind the covid ‘virgin’, the number of provinces with green zones continues to decrease. If this is the case, what is the cause? (imf)
