Erick Thohir: I’m proud of the players’ hard work

Jakarta, The Indonesia Post – PSSI general chairman Erick Thohir said he was proud of the heroic struggle of Indonesian players even though the Garuda Muda troops only became runners-up for the U-23 AFF Cup.

“First of all, I thank you for the struggle of all the players and coaching staff. With the material of many debutants, in fact we can still talk at the top level in Southeast Asia,” said Erick in his official statement, Saturday night.

According to Erick who was directly present in Thailand, he was touched by the enthusiasm and great sacrifice of the players who were willing to fulfill the country’s call.

Even though many of the main players couldn’t appear due to not being allowed by the club, the remaining players actually performed desperately for the honor of the country.

“I am touched because with only 16 players left we were able to fight to the last minute. The results have not been in our favor, but I am optimistic that this championship will provide motivation and mentality for the players to get even better,” said Erick.

The Indonesian national team became the runner up of the U-23 AFF Cup after losing on penalties 6-5 (0-0) to Vietnam at the Rayong Provincial Stadium, Saturday. The penalty shoot-out was carried out after the two teams played glasses until extra time.

Erick said the squad that appeared in the U-23 AFF Cup and the 2023 SEA Games was the initial foundation for the national team to appear on the U-23 Asian Cup stage.

According to the SOE Minister, achievement is not an instant thing but must go through a preparation process full of sacrifices and the AFF U-23 Cup is part of the national team’s long preparation to achieve good results in the AFC U-23 Cup and qualification for the 2024 Olympics.

“The U-23 AFF Cup is part of the process. Because no team in football can be successful without having a clear system, roadmap and agenda. With all the risks PSSI strives to be disciplined in the agreed system, roadmap and agenda. , including participation in the U-23 AFF,” said Erick.

Erick also invited the public to fully support the struggle of the U-23 national team. Because, said Erick, the national team has the potential to perform even better. For the players, Erick advised them to stay down to earth but always hungry to win in all competitions.

“The mentality of not being easily satisfied and always increasing our competitive level is the key for the national team to compete at a higher level. If in Southeast Asia we manage to reach the top level, why don’t we conquer Asia and even the world,” said Erick, encouraging the players. (mhn/bbs)
