Jakarta, The Indonesia Post – Minister of Communications and Informatics Johnny G. Plate assessed that the cellular operator’s decision to switch 3G to 4G networks was the right one because it could support digital transformation.
“The operator’s decision to gradually stop 3G and immediately migrate to 4G is the right decision because it is in line, encouraging the acceleration of digital transformation,” said Johnny in Jakarta, Monday.
According to Johnny, to support digitization, Indonesia requires a 4G network instead of 3G.
While removing the 3G network gradually, Johnny also asked that 4G from cellular operators be ready so that there will be no problems.
“What we ask is to gradually leave 3G, but at the same time, develop 4G. Do not let 3G be abandoned, but, 4G is not ready. That’s not allowed,” said Johnny.
Cellular operators are gradually leaving the 3G network and are starting to switch the network to 4G at a number of points in Indonesia. Telkomsel, one of the major cellular operators in Indonesia, in the March-May period will migrate to 4G in 90 districts and cities.
Secretary General of the Association of Indonesian Telecommunication Providers (ATSI) Marwan O Baasir, in March stated that traffic using 3G networks is small and continues to decline.
In March, traffic or 3G traffic in Indonesia was less than 10 percent. Meanwhile, the coverage of the 4G network is expanding.
Cellular operators for the past few years have invited cellular number users to use 4G services because they provide a better experience.
The 4G network, of course, is faster than the previous generation network.
When the 3G network is completely removed, the frequency spectrum that was previously used by 3G can be used to support 4G, even 5G networks.
ATSI also stated that a number of countries have started to abandon 3G and adopt 4G, even 5G, for reasons of more efficient use. (mhn/bbs)
