Tensions and political unrest, Britain asks all citizens to leave Myanmar

London, The Indonesia Post – Britain, urging its citizens to leave Myanmar or if they can’t get out of the country, stay at home.

The call came after a day earlier, a rights group said security forces had killed 12 protesters.

The call for Britons to leave Myanmar also came as Suu Kyi’s lawyer scoffed at the new allegations of bribery that had been filed against her client.

The British government says violence in Myanmar escalated after the military toppled Aung San Suu Kyi’s government in a coup on February 1.

“The Office for Foreign Affairs, Commonwealth & Development (FCDO) advises British citizens to leave the country on commercial means of transportation, unless there is an urgent need to stay,” the UK Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

“Political tensions and unrest have expanded since the military takeover and levels of violence have increased.”

Britain has condemned the violence in Myanmar and called for democracy to be restored.

Earlier this week, Britain also suggested it was exploring additional sanctions against Myanmar. (rmt/bbs)
