Jokowi: The crisis can be resolved if there is a will from all parties in Myanmar

Jakarta, The Indonesia Post – Indonesian President Joko Widodo said the problems in Myanmar were indeed still a challenge for ASEAN and that solving them required the political will of all parties.

“We also have to realize that the situation can be resolved if there is political will throughout Myanmar,” President Jokowi said in his speech at the commemoration of the 56th anniversary of ASEAN in Jakarta, Tuesday.

Jokowi said that ASEAN continues to help resolve the conflict in Myanmar through a five-point consensus.

The five-point consensus in question is calling for an end to violence, dialogue with all stakeholders, appointing a special envoy to facilitate mediation and dialogue, allowing ASEAN to provide humanitarian assistance to Myanmar citizens, and allowing the ASEAN special envoy to visit and meet with stakeholders in Myanmar.

ASEAN, Jokowi added, which is a big ship must continue to move forward, sail and must not sink because ASEAN leaders have responsibilities for hundreds of people in the region.

After attending the commemoration of ASEAN’s 56th anniversary, Jokowi reiterated the problems in Myanmar concerning humanity and all the people of Myanmar.

The settlement of the situation in Myanmar, said Jokowi, was complex and not easy because of the close relations with various parties.

“So it takes time and it can happen if all the stakeholders in Myanmar are willing, have the same will to solve this problem, otherwise it will be very difficult,” Jokowi said. (mhn/bbs)
