Gansu in China launches first international cargo train

Jakarta, The Indonesia Post – A cargo train on Thursday (21/4) morning local time departed from Dunhuang City in northwest China’s Gansu Province, bound for Bangkok in Thailand, marking the opening of Gansu’s first international cargo train to operate via the China-Laos Railway.

Loaded with 530 tonnes of asbestos, the train is scheduled to arrive in Bangkok via Vientiane, Laos, in 12 days. Travel via the China-Laos Railway could cut time by up to 28 days, compared to the previous 40-day sea shipping route between the two cities, according to local authorities.

Gansu’s Ministry of Commerce said that the new line is another efficient, economical, safe and convenient international logistics channel, connecting Gansu with Southeast Asian countries.

As the central region of the Silk Road Economic Belt, the inland province has accelerated its opening and operated more international cargo rail lines connecting with Central Asian, South Asian and European countries in recent years.

The China-Laos Railway, which started operating on December 3, 2021, stretches for more than 1,000 kilometers, and connects Kunming, the capital of Yunnan Province in southwest China, with Vientiane, the capital of Laos. (ojn/bbs)
