Palembang – Kuala Lumpur Reconnected, Herman Deru Inaugurates International Flights

Palembang, The Indonesia Post – After a hiatus from regular international schedules, Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II Airport (SMB II) Palembang has returned to serving regular international flight routes. The Governor of South Sumatra, H. Herman Deru, officially inaugurated the reopening of the Palembang-Kuala Lumpur route with AirAsia, in a ceremony at the VIP Room Building of SMB II Airport Palembang (Tuesday, 6/17/2025).

The inauguration carried out today is certainly through the struggle and process that has been attempted by Herman Deru along with his staff and other related parties. Where previously there were still many problems and requirements that had to be completed regarding international flight permits.

In his remarks, HD said that for the past year, SMB II Airport Palembang has only served charter international flights to Jeddah and Medina.

“But today, thanks to our joint efforts, we have received very encouraging news, the public can now enjoy international flights with AirAsia on the Palembang – Kuala Lumpur route,” said HD.

With the reopening of this route, the people of South Sumatra can now enjoy direct flights to Kuala Lumpur at affordable rates, starting from only IDR 599,000. “The distance that previously felt far and expensive has now been shortened. This is a breath of fresh air for all of us,” he added.

HD also expressed his appreciation to AirAsia, which has been a pioneer in opening the Palembang-Kuala Lumpur air route. Now, the route will operate again every day with a flight duration of around 1 hour 30 minutes.

“AirAsia has become a golden bridge that strengthens relations between Indonesia and Malaysia, especially between South Sumatra and Kuala Lumpur. Hopefully this will be the beginning of increased connectivity and closer cooperation in the future,” said Herman Deru.

At the end of his speech, HD said that with the reopening of international flights at SMB II Airport, South Sumatra now has a gateway to the outside world. (rys/ril)
