Palembang, The Indonesia Post – South Sumatra Deputy Governor H. CIK Ujang welcomed the first international flight from Kuala Lumpur to Palembang at Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II Airport on Friday (July 18, 2025).
The route now allows passengers to travel from Kuala Lumpur to Palembang in just one and a half hours via AirAsia. Kuala Lumpur also offers various destinations that can be enjoyed by travelers from Palembang and across South Sumatra.
“On behalf of the people of Kuala Lumpur, we hope for closer cooperation and visits from the people of Palembang and South Sumatra. This event is one of our efforts to foster ties and encourage Indonesians to visit us, as Indonesia remains our key tourism market,” said Mr. Zamani bin Muhammad Rafiq, Director of Government Affairs at AirAsia.
Meanwhile, Malaysia’s Consul General in Indonesia, Sahril Nizam bin Abdul Malek, expressed support for South Sumatra Province’s efforts in reopening the Palembang–Malaysia route. He emphasized the importance of strengthening people-to-people connections, economic growth, and tourism between the two countries.
The South Sumatra Provincial Government reaffirmed its commitment to supporting all forms of international connectivity development while positioning Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II Airport as a safe, comfortable, and competitive international gateway for both residents and foreign tourists.
