Ogan Ilir, The Indonesia Post – The tradition of melebung is a legacy from the ancestors of the people of Ogan Ilir (OI) Regency, South Sumatra [Sumsel]. This tradition is a community activity around catching fish in the swamp, usually done during the dry season.
The opportunity to harvest fish this time was in Ulak Segelung village, Indralaya sub-district, Ogan Ilir district, attended by the head of the TP PKK South Sumatra, Feby Deru, along with the Deputy Chairperson of the TP PKK South Sumatra Fauziah Mawardi Yahya, on Tuesday (13/10/2020) afternoon.
Not only that, when he was harvesting fish, Feby Deru was even accompanied by his two grandchildren, Danis and Deka, who were so enthusiastic and happy to catch fish with local residents.
“It is hoped that floating fish can preserve local wisdom in the area here. It will also increase friendship and togetherness, not only among members of the South Sumatra TP PKK, but also with residents here,” said Feby.
Feby said that there are various kinds of fish that are harvested, such as betok, tembakang, cork, catfish and sepat. According to him, cultivating fish which is done by residents is a positive thing, and can be an example for the younger generation.
“In difficult times like today, cultivating fish can be an effort to maintain food security. How can we survive a difficult situation by processing and empowering what is in our environment,” said Feby.
As for the Deputy Chairman of TP PKK South Sumatra, Fauziah Mawardi Yahya said that melting activities are carried out once a year in August. However, due to the pandemic situation, scavenging could only be done in October.
“The current harvest is not as much as last time. This is due to the high acidity level of the water,” he said.
An atmosphere full of intimacy and warmth seemed to color the fish harvesting action which was followed by lunch together serving a menu of various grilled and fried fish. (nfl/ril)
