Communication Minister: Multifunctional satellite can help equalize internet access

Jakarta, The Indonesia Post – Minister of Communication and Information (Kominfo) Johnny G. Plate said the procurement of multifunctional satellites can help the government complete the target of providing internet service access.

He conveyed this at a press conference “Signing of the Contract for the Procurement of Goods/Services for the Provision of Hot Backup Satellite (HBS) and Operational Services” which took place in a hybrid manner from Kempinski Hotel, Jakarta, Tuesday (15/03), quoted from a press release.

He said that currently his party has deployed 360,000 km of optical fiber on land and seabed. However, this is not enough considering that there are still points in the territory of Indonesia that are not evenly connected.

“Not all of us can connect to fiber optic networks in Indonesia, so we have to combine it with a microwave link in the form of satellite communication,” said Johnny.

In order for satellite communication services to be optimal, Johnny said the Ministry of Communication and Informatics chose the latest technology and was in accordance with the needs of the islands at the equator.

For the procurement of satellites, he said that his party had requested to prepare satellites with software defined satellite technology, namely satellites whose service areas can be regulated through their software upstream.

“Well, we will learn and hopefully this new technology will provide or allow for more competitive satellite prices,” he said.

Johnny said HBS is a backup for SATRIA-I using very high-throughput technology is being built and scheduled for completion in mid 2023. The HBS satellite also provides additional capacity for internet network infrastructure.

“In terms of bandwidth, HTS with this new technology has a capacity equivalent to the SATRIA-I Satellite. To be clear, this 150 Gbps is used by BAKTI Kominfo of 80 and more will be used by countries around ASEAN. PSN’s own use is to replace the need for the Nusantara-2 satellite, which failed to put into orbit in April 2020 ago,” he said.

Johnny emphasized that his party has also considered technical aspects by operators, users, and satellite manufacturing factories.

“It’s definitely been calculated, analyzed properly. So it’s clear, yes, this satellite is Ka-band, while Telkom’s satellite is Ku-band and C-band, so they won’t interfere with each other,” he said. (mhn/bbs)
