Indonesian Foreign Minister: The G20 must be a catalyst to raise the spirit of collaboration

Jakarta, The Indonesia Post – Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi called on the G20 to become a catalyst to revive the spirit of global collaboration.

At the G20 foreign ministers meeting (FMM) in New Delhi, India, Thursday, Foreign Minister Retno emphasized that a spirit of cooperation is urgently needed to respond to current global challenges.

“Last year the G20 leaders showed a similar spirit in Bali. In the midst of a difficult situation, they can put aside their differences and agree on concrete results that are beneficial to the whole world,” said Retno, as conveyed through a written statement from the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The flow of humanitarian aid from various countries to Turkey, which was hit by an earthquake some time ago, said Retno, showed that the spirit of collaboration still exists.

According to her, the spirit of collaboration needs to be kept alive to accelerate global recovery and end the war in Ukraine.

Currently global economic growth is at its lowest point in two decades. As many as 349 million people in 79 countries are experiencing a food crisis.

If the fertilizer crisis is not resolved, the food crisis will get worse, especially for developing countries.

“If the war in Ukraine continues, the global situation will only get worse. Therefore, the war must stop. We must continue to strive for a peaceful settlement,” said Retno.

She said that the war in Ukraine further emphasized the importance of respecting international law and building an inclusive regional security architecture to create peace, stability and prosperity.

These are the things that ASEAN has been working on for the last five decades.

“Indonesia’s chairmanship in ASEAN will work hard to expand this effort into the Indo-Pacific region. Indonesia will focus on encouraging the concrete implementation of the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific so that all countries can develop together,” said Foreign Minister Retno.

She further said that multilateralism is built on the foundation of inclusive collaboration, and only then can multilateralism bear fruit and overcome today’s challenges.

“With its collective influence, the G20 must be a catalyst to revive the spirit of collaboration. Inclusive collaboration will lead us to a world that is peaceful, stable and prosperous,” said Retno.

The FMM G20 meeting in New Delhi consisted of two sessions, namely session 1 with the topic “Strengthening Multilateralism, Food and Energy Security, and Development Cooperation”; and session 2 with the topic “Fight Against Terrorism, Mapping Global Skills, Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Management .” (mhn/bbs)
