Jerusalem, The Indonesia Post – Israel’s communications minister said Sunday he was looking into the possible closure of Al Jazeera’s local bureau, and accused the Qatari news station of pro-Hamas incitement and exposing Israeli soldiers to potential attacks from Gaza.
The plan to close Al Jazeera has been vetted by Israeli security officials and is being vetted by legal experts, Israeli Communications Minister Shloma Karhi said, adding that she would bring it to the cabinet the following day.
Al Jazeera and the government in Doha have not yet commented on this.
“This (Al Jazeera) is an inflammatory station, this is a station that films troops in gathering places (outside Gaza)… that incites against Israeli citizens – a propaganda mouthpiece,” Karhi told Israeli Army Radio.
“It makes no sense that the Hamas spokesman’s message was conveyed through this station. I hope we can resolve it today,” he continued.
It is still unclear whether Karhi’s latest statement refers to a cabinet meeting on this matter or is related to implementing the media shutdown. (mhn/bbs)
