“What is even more encouraging is that at the UN Human Rights Council, there is no record of any human rights violations in Indonesia,” Mahfud said in a virtual press conference regarding his visit to the UN Human Rights Council and the UN High Commission for Human Rights in Geneva, Switzerland, as monitored on the channel. In the opening speech of the 50th Session of the Human Rights Council Session delivered by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, he continued, Indonesia was not included in the list of 21 countries whose human rights developments are being referred to by them.
“The High Commissioner for Human Rights said that in the 21 countries whose human rights developments are referred to, Indonesia is not included in it,” said Mahfud.
Thus, Mahfud also said that Indonesia has been three times in a row from 2021 to 2022, not being a country that is assessed by the UN Human Rights Council as having problems related to human rights violations.
“It’s been three years, since 2020 to be exact, the UN Human Rights Council has not mentioned Indonesia in the country’s records that have problems with human rights violations,” said the former Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court.
Furthermore, Mahfud also conveyed that this achievement indicated that Indonesia had made progress and communicated proportionally regarding the protection and enforcement of human rights.
At the same time, he stated that the accusations about Indonesia being under the spotlight of the United Nations for human rights violations were not true.
“Another note in my visit to the Human Rights Council and the Office of the High Human Rights Commission in Geneva, it turns out, that the accusations that Indonesia is under the spotlight of the United Nations for human rights violations are not true,” said Mahfud.
He explained that there were indeed reports from non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to the Special Procedure Mandate Holders (SPMH). However, he continued, these reports were never discussed at the Human Rights Council session.
Mahfud said the reports were accommodated and submitted to the Indonesian government for completion.
“The reports are accommodated and submitted to our Government and after being answered, the problem is resolved and not brought to the Human Rights Council,” added Mahfud.
In addition, Mahfud also emphasized that the information regarding the agenda of the visit of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights to Indonesia to investigate human rights violations was not true.
“Besides that, it is also not true that there is an agenda for the visit of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights to Indonesia to conduct an investigation. Instead, we invited them to Indonesia, but the schedule has not been set,” said Mahfud. (ojn/bbs)
