Minister of Finance: The state cannot solve the climate change agenda alone

Jakarta, The Indonesia Post – Minister of Finance (Menkeu) Sri Mulyani said a country cannot solve the climate change agenda individually or alone because climate change is a global public problem.

“Climate change is a global public gamble,” Sri Mulyani said at the Munich Security Conference entitled “Power Shifts: Geopolitics of the Green Transaction”, which was monitored online in Jakarta, Saturday.

For this reason, countries in the world must be able to work together in dealing with current climate change.

Sri Mulyani gave an example of one of the countries that are constrained in overcoming climate change and need help, namely countries in the southern part of the world. These countries have capital and technological constraints that provide different and not ideal choices.

Currently these countries continue to discuss the energy transition, designing a road map that can be done by looking at fiscal, political conditions, to affordability.

Renewable energy requires a different investment. Geothermal is different, in that there is an initial risk on exploration, hydro, as well as more up-front investment capital outlay.

According to her, many countries in the global south do not have access to that capital, so they can start with renewable energy, beyond solar power.

Therefore this problem becomes very important, especially if you look at the world map, the southern countries of the world are currently the most developed countries with an economy that will grow bigger.

“Many of them could actually afford to have renewable energy from the start instead of going into fossil fuels and then cleaning it up,” she said. (mhn/bbs)
