Minister of Trade: The Good Design Indonesia event opens opportunities for the export market

Jakarta, The Indonesia Post – Minister of Trade Muhammad Lutfi said that the Good Design Indonesia (GDI) 2022 event opened up opportunities for Indonesia’s best design works to enter the export market.

“GDI 2022 plays a role in supporting the government’s efforts to maintain the momentum of increasing non-oil and gas exports. Design development is closely related to trade and national economic recovery,” said the Trade Minister in a statement received in Jakarta, Thursday.

Thanks to quality designs, continued Lutfi, a product and service will have added value and high commercial value in the domestic and international markets.

To attract more talented and potential participants, the Ministry of Trade started a hybrid socialization of GDI 2022 with the implementation of strict health protocols.

According to Lutfi, the Ministry of Trade will open the gates to the export market and bring together exporters with potential buyers.

“The Ministry of Trade is also ready to facilitate the negotiation process until a trade agreement is reached. In short, good design, increased exports,” explained Trade Minister Lutfi.

Meanwhile, at the launch of the GDI 2022 socialization, the Director General of National Export Development at the Ministry of Trade Didi Sumedi said that in the sixth year of the GDI event, the Ministry of Trade together with Indonesian design practitioners continue to curate value-added local products that are in line with design trends and global market tastes.

“Through GDI 2022, it is hoped that local products will have more value when exported and be able to compete in the global market,” added Didi.

The implementation of GDI, continued Didi, is an effort by the Ministry of Trade to curate value-added products or services according to design trends and global market tastes. The existence of added value can be a determinant for buyers in choosing goods and services.

“One way for buyers to choose the goods and services offered is to consider the added value that gives more advantages and benefits for users,” said Didi.

Value-added products and services that have won the GDI award which are then prioritized to be promoted to potential buyers in Indonesia’s trading partner countries

It is known, registration for GDI 2022 opens on January 20, 2022 and will close on March 31, 2022. There are 17 product categories at GDI 2020 which include handicrafts, accessories, home decoration, furniture, footwear, vehicles, architectural design and building construction, design of community activities, public space facilities, online applications, household and gardening equipment, and design of building materials.

Based on data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), Indonesia’s non-oil and gas exports in 2021 were recorded at US$ 219.25 billion, or up 41.50 percent compared to 2020 which was valued at US$ 154.94 billion.

Meanwhile, at the beginning of 2022, Indonesia’s non-oil and gas export transactions were recorded at 18.26 billion US dollars in January 2022, an increase of 26.74 percent compared to the same period last year.

Commodities that experienced an increase in world demand were precious metals and jewelry/gems (87.69 percent); inorganic chemicals (56.21 percent); footwear (4.14 percent); and other base metals (179.72 percent).

The top three countries that import products from Indonesia are China (3.51 billion US dollars), the United States (2.56 billion US dollars) and Japan (1.51 billion US dollars). (mhn/bbs)
