Jakarta, The Indonesia Post – Chairman of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) RI Bambang Soesatyo invited the government and the community to work together to help disaster victims and overcome a number of natural disasters that have occurred recently.
“The year 2021 is just entering the middle of January, but there have been many natural disasters in Indonesia. For that, I urge all of us to remain vigilant, ”said Bamsoet, in a written statement, in Jakarta, Sunday.
Bamsoet expressed his deep concern and condolences for a number of natural disasters in the country that caused casualties and material losses.
The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) noted that there were 136 natural disasters that occurred in Indonesia during the period 1-16 January 2021, which claimed at least 80 lives and injured 858 people. The chairman of the 20th DPR RI (Parliamentary) said that the most natural disasters that occurred were floods with 95 incidents, 25 landslides, 12 tornadoes, 2 earthquakes and 2 tidal waves that affected 405,584 people and displaced.
“Not to mention the two major disasters in the form of floods in South Kalimantan which resulted in at least 5 people dying and 112 thousand people being displaced. As well, an earthquake measuring 6.2 M rocked West Sulawesi which killed 56 people and injured 637 people, “said Bamsoet.
Therefore, the Head of the FKPPI State Defense Agency asked the Ministry of Social Affairs (Kemensos) to work with the local government and BNPB to carry out a safe evacuation process for residents according to health protocols.
As well, preparing shelters for residents, assistance needed by disaster victims, such as tents, blankets, medicines, as well as public kitchens and toilets.
“The Ministry of Health together with the Health Office must immediately build a health post and provide qualified medical personnel in handling victims, both flood victims and earthquake victims so that people who are sick and injured can be handled properly,” said Bamsoet.
Not only that, the Deputy Chairperson of Pemuda Pancasila continued, the Ministry of Social Affairs must also immediately coordinate with local governments to carry out emergency response operations related to earthquake and flood handling, as well as strengthen disaster management prevention efforts in each region, especially in areas with high risk categories.
With these efforts, he said, it is hoped that the impact of disasters can be minimized in order to protect the community, including minimizing losses and damage if one day a disaster occurs.
“I also urge BNPB, BPBD and Tagana to be able to optimize the number of officers and volunteers deployed to areas affected by floods and earthquakes, so that the implementation of rescue and assistance to victims can be carried out completely,” concluded Bamsoet. (icn / bbs)
