President: Infrastructure development should not increase disaster risk

Jakarta, The Indonesia Post – President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) said infrastructure development must reduce disaster risk, not increase disaster risk.

The President requires that all national and regional development programs be oriented towards disaster-resilient policies.

“Business permits issued must consider disaster risk, infrastructure development must reduce disasters, not increase disaster risk,” President Jokowi said when opening the National Coordination Meeting for Disaster Management (BNPB) virtually from the Bogor Presidential Palace, West Java, Wednesday.

The President said that the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) must actively invite all central and regional government officials to orient development programs to the concept of disaster resilience. Disaster-resilient policies should go mainstream, he added.

“BNPB must actively invite all central and regional government officials so that all development programs must be oriented towards being resilient to disasters. All of these must be invited,” said the President.

The President also asked for the disaster education system to continue to be improved, especially in disaster-prone areas. A culture of disaster awareness must start early on from every individual, family, community, school, to the community.

“Explore various local wisdoms that exist in the community, train the community to be responsive to disasters, carry out exercises, simulations at any time, don’t wait for a disaster to come,” he said.

The Head of State emphasized that the potential and strengths that exist in the community must be optimized to create a disaster-resilient society. Disaster-resilient Indonesia must be a big agenda carried out by all components of the government and components of the nation.

“We embrace the strengths and potentials that exist in society, we create a disaster-resilient society, we create a disaster-resilient society,” said President Jokowi. (ojn/bbs)
