Sri Mulyani says Indonesia needs to create energy independence

Jakarta, The Indonesia Post – Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati said Indonesia needed to create energy independence through energy reform in order to survive in the midst of the challenges of the global economy going forward.

According to her, this independence is important considering that currently the energy supply chain in Europe is being disrupted because it depends on supply from Russia, which is in conflict with Ukraine.

“Situations like this should make Indonesia as an archipelagic country with high economic growth start thinking about how to create energy independence in Indonesia. Energy reform is also very important,” she said in the Leaders Talk of the State Electricity Company (PLN) Education and Training Center monitored in Jakarta, Wednesday.

Therefore, she continued, the government plans to implement a policy so that people switch from gas stoves to electric stoves to overcome the increasing demand for oil and gas, as well as absorb PLN’s electricity production.

In addition, Indonesia is also expected to develop the potential for using new and renewable energy (EBT) with lower carbon dioxide emissions.

“Indonesia has huge potential for new and renewable energy. We need to formulate policies and regulations so that energy sources can reflect the strength of energy potential in Indonesia,” she said.

She also hopes that PLN can continue to improve electricity subsidies by using information technology-based innovations to be more targeted. Meanwhile, people who do not receive subsidies are expected to continue to enjoy electricity at low prices so that economic activities can also run smoothly.

“This will depend on PLN’s electricity production costs. If their production is efficient, people can get cheap electricity, this is a big service to Indonesia’s national economy,” she said. (mhn/bbs)
