UN envoy highlights the importance of disaster management, climate at the same time

Jakarta, The Indonesia Post – The Special Envoy of the United Nations (UN) for Disaster Risk Reduction Mami Mizutori stressed the importance of efforts to reduce disaster risk along with protecting the environment.

“No country is immune from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and extreme climate events. However, the important thing is that the impact of both types of disasters can be mitigated through disaster reduction,” she said at a press conference in preparation for the 7th Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (GPDRR), which was monitored from Jakarta, Friday.

The GPDRR Forum which will be held in Bali, he said, will discuss efforts to build sustainable disaster resilience with environmental protection.

“I think Indonesia is the right host. Although it is vulnerable to disasters and has faced various disasters, (Indonesia) has found ways to address disaster risks at the national and regional levels,” she said.

She explained that political leadership from the top tiers of local and central government was needed for this effort.

“This is in line with the big theme of the G20 Indonesia and we can turn risk into resilience and improve our economy,” she added.

During last year’s COP26, said Mizutori, it was clear that disaster resilience has an important role, and at this year’s COP27 in Egypt, there will be further discussion on how climate adaptation can be integrated with comprehensive risk reduction.

This is especially important for developing countries, archipelagic countries and small countries, she said.

“This global platform will bridge COP26 and COP27 through discussions related to climate and disaster risk reduction,” she said. (ojn/bbs)
