Jakarta, The Indonesia Post – The Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Mahfud MD said that the 2024 election stages were carried out according to the schedule agreed through General Election Commission Regulation (PKPU) Number 3 of 2022.
“This year is a political year. Thank God the government has managed to ensure that at least until now, at least until this stage and God willing, it will reach the final stage in the future so that the 2024 elections will be carried out according to the constitutional calendar,” said Mahfud MD in the Sentra Gakkumdu Discussion Forum. , as monitored online via the Indonesian Ministry of Politics, Law and Security Ministry’s YouTube channel, Jakarta, Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the presidential election will be held on February 14, 2024, while the local elections will be held on November 27, 2024.
For this reason, continued Mahfud, there is no longer any issue of postponing and extending the 2024 election period. This is because the impact that will be borne by the constitution is very heavy if the elections do not go according to the predetermined schedule.
“It could cause chaos in our political field, if we cannot ensure that the elections will be held in earnest as scheduled,” he explained.
Previously, on Friday (14/7), Deputy IV of the Presidential Staff Office (KSP) Juri Ardiantoro emphasized that the government would continue to hold regional head elections (pilkada) simultaneously on November 27, 2024.
“The government remains in accordance with the law’s scenario that regional elections are held in November 2024,” Juri said in Jakarta, Friday.
On Thursday (14/7), the Indonesian Election Supervisory Body (Bawaslu) proposed that the government and election organizers, such as the Indonesian General Election Commission (KPU) discuss options for postponing the 2024 simultaneous regional elections.
According to the Chairman of the Indonesian Bawaslu Rahmat Bagja as quoted from the official website of the Indonesian Election Supervisory Body in Jakarta, Thursday, the option of postponing the 2024 Pilkada Simultaneous should be discussed because its implementation overlaps with the 2024 Election and there is also the potential for disruption to security and order.
“We are worried that the 2024 Election (Pilkada) will actually be due to the November 2024 vote, which in October 2024 will only be inaugurated for a new president, of course with ministers and officials who may change. Therefore, we suggest that we should discuss the option of postponing the election (pilkada) because this is the first times simultaneously,” said Bagja. (mhn/bbs)
