Strategy to be a Productive Subordinate, Not Everyone Becomes a Leader

Sumedang, The Indonesia Post – Working in a government agency or other sector organization definitely requires social interaction that involves many people. As employees, we are required to be able to work well and be able to build good relationships with colleagues, superiors, subordinates, partners and so on. The inability to adapt to the environment can cause problems in the workplace.

It’s easy to find training or seminars related to how to be a good leader, but it’s rare to find seminars that talk about being a good subordinate. In fact, the Head of Bandung Regional Human Resource Development Center (PPSDM), Belly Isnaeni stated that: “If everyone wants to be a leader/leader, then who will be the employee or his subordinates?” he said when opening the Webinar Series #9 entitled Strategy to Be a Good Subordinate in the Digital Era, Tuesday (22/2/2022).

This event is the initiation of the Bandung Regional PPSDM which is the Technical Implementation Unit (UPT) of the Human Resources Development Agency (BPSDM) Ministry of Home Affairs.

Furthermore, the man who was born in Palembang said: “…Alhamdulillah, we as a Competency Development Institute have thought of making this online seminar which will thoroughly discuss successful ways to become good subordinates or early staff cadres, especially in today’s digital era”.

There is a simple way to predict whether someone will make a good boss in the future. “Just look at his personal qualities when he was a subordinate. If someone is able to be a good subordinate to his superior, then he has a great chance to become a good boss later, he added. A person who cannot be a good subordinate, has very little chance of becoming a good boss. How is it possible to be a good boss if he can’t be a good subordinate.

This event presents Achmad Dheni Suwardhani (Widyaiswara PPSDM Bandung Regional) as a resource person who already has experience in the fields of organization, leadership and digital development. Interestingly, this event was so dynamic that there were questions and answers between participants and resource persons, and the Head of Bandung Regional PPSDM also commented on the dynamics of the Webinar intended to enrich the treasures of dialogue.

Achmad Dheni Suwardhani explained that being a good subordinate does not mean being a person who can only say “Ready, sir” or “Ready, ma’am”. Because those who are “ABS (As long as you are happy)” are not good subordinates. Good subordinates sometimes have to find strong supporters for their superiors. And sometimes, you have to be a formidable sparring partner. A sparring partner does not just accept whatever his boss does. He parried, dodged, even attacked. In the relationship between superiors and subordinates, sparring partners means placing themselves as people who are able to provide input to superiors, complete things that are still lacking, or offer better alternatives and solutions. When a person becomes a sparring partner, someone indirectly trains himself to become a boss.
