Jakarta, The Indonesia Post – President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) targets Indonesia to become the center of the halal industry by 2024 given the huge potential of the halal product market in the country.
“Indonesia has the potential to become the center of the world’s halal industry as well as the mecca of the world’s fashion industry. I target that this goal can be achieved by 2024,” said President Jokowi when opening the online Trade Expo Indonesia (TEI) Digital Edition monitored in Jakarta, Thursday.
The President quoted the State of Global Islamic economic report in 2021 which stated that the spending of the world’s Muslims reached more than 2 trillion US dollars. The Muslim community’s spending consists of various sectors, namely food, fashion, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, to the recreation or tourism sector.
“Surely this is an opportunity that we must take advantage of,” said the President.
Jokowi appreciated the TEI Digital Edition this time presenting a Muslim fashion festival and halal forum. This will encourage the development of the halal product market from Indonesia to the world.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Trade Muhammad Lutfi said the export of halal products from Indonesia reached 6 billion US dollars, equivalent to the 21st rank in the world. Meanwhile, Muslim fashion exports are estimated at US$4.1 billion or equivalent to the top 13 in the world.
In TEI, Indonesia promotes halal products and Indonesian Muslim fashion by providing a special platform for Indonesian halal products. There is also Jakarta Muslim Fashion Week which will be held simultaneously with TEI.
“We do this as an effort to make Indonesia a center for the halal industry and a fashion mecca for the world’s Muslim fashion industry,” said Trade Minister Lutfi. (ojn/bbs)
